History of 1380 AM – Historic Hinton’s Hometown Radio
Radio station WMTD-AM 1380 was licensed by the Federal Communications Commission to Bluestone Broadcasters, Inc. and went on the air in 1963. The station hosted live broadcasting with announcers and live disc jockeys that programmed a “block” format. It featured various musical genres such as a country music show and afternoon show called “Swing Time” with Top 40 Hits of the time and featured selected genres of music played during certain scheduled hours. Also heard, were popular interactive call-in shows such as “Swap Shop,” “Letters to Santa,” contents and of course announcements of local obituaries and community news. In 1979 a transfer of control was made to Southern Communications, a family owned multi-station corporation in Beckley, WV.
In 1985 WMTD-FM was launched to broadcast on the frequency of 102.3FM and a new separate format was established as their on air slogan was “The River.” It featured album rock music which aged with the times and became classic rock. The main studio was moved from the former National Bank of Summers Building on Temple Street in the Hinton Historic District to Avis and was featuring additional satellite fed programming. In 1993, WMTD-AM went silent and was intermittently on the air as the tower site was moved to Madams Creek, WV. In 2003, the station was sold and assigned to Southern Communications with consummation in 2005. In January 2010, MountainPlex Media, LLC was formed as a Hinton-based corporation locally owned by businessman Ken Allman. Allman recruited veteran broadcaster Mike Craft to return to Hinton to build out and manage the station.
RadioAM1380 mission is to provide a reliable source of local information to the Hinton community and the people of Summers County. With this in mind, RadioAM1380 took on the label of Historic Hinton’s Hometown Radio. RadioAM1380 studios are now located in the Hinton Historic District on the top floor of the Ritz Theatre Cinema & Performing Arts with broadcast and satellite facilities located on Madams Creek, WV.
